Today, the Suffolk County Police Department said goodbye to one of its own as active member Detective Sergeant John Kempf was laid to rest at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.
D/Sgt. Kempf, who lost his battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease on April 3, joined the SCPD in September 1987 and was assigned to the First Precinct upon graduation from the academy. He was transferred to the Third Precinct upon his promotion to sergeant in 2002. He was named detective/sergeant in December 2006 and served in the First, Second and Fourth Squads before earning a spot in the Homicide Squad in June 2015.
D/Sgt. Kempf is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
"The loss of Detective Sergeant Kempf will be felt immensely by all members of the department," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said. "He served the residents of Suffolk County with distinction for more than three decades and our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time."
