Dear SOA Member,
As you are aware, SOA President John Cowie has retired effective 1/27/20 after over four decades of service to the people of Suffolk County and the SOA. I’d like to personally thank him for all that he has done for the SOA membership and for all that he has taught me as we worked together. John really appreciates everyone that was able to visit and congratulate him on his retirement. It was a great day and the overwhelming number of guests is a testament to John and his hard work and character. We all wish him a long, happy and healthy retirement.
Additionally, we recently had another loss to the SOA as 4thPrecinct Trustee Stephen Krajci retired on January 4th after 30 + years of dedicated police service. We also wish Steve the best for a long, happy and healthy retirement!
In accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws, I assume the Presidency and Lou Dini is moving up to the position of First Vice President. A special SOA board meeting was held on 1/27/20 to fill the vacancy on the executive board. At the meeting I nominated Secretary Jim Roddin to fill the position of Second Vice President and 7th Precinct Trustee John Cerato to fill the position of Secretary. Both position changes were unanimously approved by the board. I have a tremendous amount of respect for how hard Jim and John have worked selflessly for the membership. I am quite confident of their continued success in their efforts as part of the executive board moving forward.
As a result of the mentioned retirements and board position changes we are left with two vacancies: the 4th and the 7thPrecinct Trustees. Members of the affected commands were all mailed notification letters and sent follow up emails regarding the special elections to be held to fill these vacancies. Nominations for these positions will be at the February 12th open meeting. The elections will be conducted online on our new website. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so. Headquarters 1 Trustee Brendan Pilkington has done an outstanding job on the site.
I am looking forward to continuing to work hard to serve you, the membership, in my new role as President. I am very proud of this organization due to the outstanding membership. I appreciate you and all of your hard work that you do for the Department and the people of Suffolk County. Thank you.
The entire board is available to assist you so please contact us should you need assistance.
I look forward to seeing you all soon and hope that everyone has a great 2020.
