2/10/20 - Message from the President
As you know, our contract provided for a 2.25% raise effective January 1st, as well as step realignment effective December 17th, 2019. I have been in contact with Labor Relations about the issue of when the raises will be included in your paychecks. They report it is a complex situation with the various pay rates with all the police unions contracts. It will take several more pay periods for the raises and step adjustments to kick in. However, you will absolutely be getting a retro check for the full difference several pay periods after that. This is a process and I ask you for your continued patience and understanding. Please refrain from calling payroll as they are well aware of the situation.
The new bail reform, evidence discovery rules and 50-A protection are all very serious issues we are currently facing. Besides experiencing it firsthand, you have probably heard many stories of the disastrous results of the dangerous laws that went into effect January 1st. The SOA and our attorneys are frequently meeting with the other police and corrections officers’ unions, as well as state politicians, to fight to protect your rights and to draft legislation to change these harmful laws. First Vice President Lou Dini continues to work very actively in Albany, and throughout the state, as part of the New York State Association of PBAs in a collaborative effort for positive change.
We continue to see numerous reports of anti-police activity and outright attacks on uniformed personnel throughout the country. Please continue to be vigilant in your daily duties and for your subordinates. This is a stressful time and these situations need to be monitored. Remember that all the police unions offer Peer Support should you, your colleagues or personnel need assistance. This information can be found on our website as well as the county intranet.
If you haven’t already done so, please register for the SOA website and phone app. The site includes a tremendous amount of information which can also be accessed via the app. This includes a duty chart calendar, special events calendar, Benefit Fund forms, the contract and much more.
Our next open meeting is this Wednesday, February 12th at the Irish Coffee Pub, East Islip at 6:00PM. Hope to see you there.
As always, contact your Trustee or other board member should you need any assistance.
